Guide to Using HSA/FSA for Medical Massage

To use an HSA or FSA card for medical massage therapy, obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or prescription from a doctor specifying the condition, treatment duration, and frequency. Ensure the massage therapist is licensed, as the service must treat a specific condition (e.g., pain, injury) rather than general wellness.

Steps to Use HSA/FSA for Massage Therapy:

  1. Get a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN): Ask your primary care physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist for a note stating that massage therapy is medically necessary to treat a specific, diagnosed condition.
  2. Verify Coverage: Contact your FSA/HSA administrator to confirm that massage therapy with an LMN is an eligible expense under your specific plan. (Very Important!)
  3. Book Your Appointment: Bring your LMN or prescription with you to your first appointment or email it directly to our office by sending it to totalmassageandbodywork@gmail.com. If we do not have a copy of your LMN or prescription on file at the time of checkout we will not be able to process your HSA/FSA payment.
  4. Pay with Card or Request Reimbursement:
  5. Direct Payment: Present your HSA/FSA debit card at the time of service.
  6. Reimbursement: Pay with your personal card, save the receipt, and submit the receipt along with your LMN to your administrator for reimbursement.
  7. Keep Documentation: Retain the LMN and all receipts for at least 3-7 years for tax purposes.

Important Notes:

  1. Validity: The LMN is typically valid for one year.
  2. Tips and Gratuity: Tips are not eligible for HSA/FSA payment.
  3. Ineligibility: Massage for general relaxation or stress reduction without a documented medical need may be considered ineligible by the IRS.
